How to Fill and Sign a PDF — No Printing or Scanning (Free, No Install)

Jun 21, 2026

That application PDF from your bank or a business partner — you just need to fill in your name and date and sign, yet somehow the how-to feels out of reach. Pulling out the printer, filling the boxes with a pen, then scanning it back into a PDF to send takes more time than you'd expect. If you don't have a printer or you're out and about, it's even trickier.

This is exactly where Fill & Sign comes in. You keep the PDF on screen, type text over the blank fields, and lay a handwritten signature or stamp right on top to finish. This article walks through, step by step, how to fill in text and sign a PDF for free, with no install and no sign-up.

How is this different from a "signature request"?

E-signature services have two flows. They're easy to mix up, so let's sort them out first.

  • Signature request — You send a link to someone else and collect their signature. Used when there's a separate counterparty (lease agreements, transaction contracts, etc.).
  • Fill & SignYou fill in and sign a PDF you received and submit it right away. Suited to "fill it out and return it" documents like application forms, consent forms, and confirmations.

If you need a signature from someone else, use e-signature (signature request); if you just need to fill it out yourself, use Fill & Sign.

How to fill and sign — three steps

  1. Open the PDF — Go to Fill & Sign PDF and drag your file in or open it with "Choose file." The PDF appears on screen as-is.
  2. Add text and a signature — Press "+Text" at the top to enter your name, contact, and date, then press "Signature" to draw with your mouse or finger. Drag the center (✛) of an added item to position it and drag a corner to resize it so it fits the blank perfectly.
  3. Save as PDF — Press "Save as PDF" and a new PDF with your text and signature baked in downloads immediately. Send it by email or messenger and you're done.

Uploaded files are used only for processing and are not stored on the server.

Especially handy when

  • Filling in your name, contact, and date on an application, consent, or confirmation form and signing to return it.
  • You have no printer or scanner and want to fill it out right on your phone or laptop.
  • You have a stamp image and want to lay the stamp on top instead of a signature.
  • Before submitting, you want to add a page number or watermark, or combine it with other documents into one file.

Small tips for a clean fill

  • If text overflows a box, drag a corner to shrink the text size. Matching it to the box height looks neat.
  • When entering the same information (like your name) in several boxes, duplicate a text item you've already made to go faster.
  • If you don't like your signature, you can erase it and draw again, so feel free to experiment.

Frequently asked questions

Q. How do I add a handwritten signature?
Press the "Signature" button on screen, then draw with your mouse or finger. The drawn signature goes straight into the PDF, and you can adjust its position and size.

Q. Can I add a stamp image too?
Yes. You can upload a stamp image you've prepared and lay it on the signature spot. A PNG with a transparent background goes in more cleanly.

Q. Is it free? Are uploaded files stored?
It's free, and uploaded files are used only for processing and are not stored on the server.

Q. Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Both text entry and signature drawing work in a mobile browser.
