How to Password-Protect and Unlock a PDF (Free, No Install, AES-256)
Jun 21, 2026
When you send a sensitive PDF like a contract, ID, or bank statement by email or messenger, there is always that worry: "what if the wrong person opens it?" Setting an open password means only someone who knows the password can open the file, which puts your mind at ease. On the flip side, sometimes a PDF you received keeps asking for a password and you would rather remove the lock. This guide covers how to set and remove a PDF password for free, with no install or sign-up.
Pick "Lock/Unlock" and just enter a password. Free, no install or sign-up, and your files and password are never stored.
Lock or unlock a PDF →Why set a password?
The "open password" on a PDF is not a simple latch — it actually encrypts the file's contents using AES-256. So without the password, the contents cannot be read at all. Even if an email is misdelivered or a USB drive is lost, you get one layer of protection.
How to set a password — 3 steps
- Select "Set password" — choose lock mode at PDF Password.
- Enter the password — type the password you want and confirm it. The two-field design prevents a typo from locking the file with the wrong password.
- Select the PDF and apply — upload the file and click "Apply," and a PDF encrypted with AES-256 downloads right away. The recipient will be asked for the password when opening it.
How to remove a password — 3 steps
- Select "Remove password" — switch to unlock mode.
- Enter the current password — type the password currently set, which you know.
- Select the PDF and apply — it produces and downloads an unlocked PDF. From then on it will not ask for a password when opened.
Uploaded files and the password you enter are used only for processing and are not stored on the server.
Good to know
- Only unlock documents you own or are authorized to access. This is not a tool for bypassing someone else's password.
- If you forget the password, it cannot be removed. Keep it somewhere safe like a notes app or a password manager.
- If another task told you to "unlock the file first," remove the lock here, then continue with Compress PDF or Organize Pages.
